PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Developers have asked federal and state regulators to approve the construction of five wind turbines off Block Island.

In August, a federal agency determined that the $300-million Deepwater Wind project has no potential wind energy competition.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/yXauJR ) that Deepwater has submitted a seven-volume package that includes a lengthy environmental report about birds and marine life, archeological surveys and samplings of the ocean floor.

If the plan receives all necessary approvals, the wind farm could be in operation as early as the fall of 2014.

Deepwater’s plan is to install five turbines as a demonstration project before moving forward with a larger wind farm in federal waters off Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The 30-megawatt wind farm would produce enough power for 17,000 homes.
