Biden taps Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti for India ambassador post

President Joe Biden has nominated Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as U.S. ambassador to India, the White House said.

Garcetti, a onetime presidential prospect, was a prominent Biden surrogate throughout the 2020 race, serving as national co-chair for the Biden campaign and a co-chair of the vice presidential nominating committee.

He was viewed as a shoo-in for a top administration post before several controversies related to his mayoral office surfaced publicly. According to reports, a top aide was accused of sexual harassment, and another staffer was accused of mocking labor leader Dolores Huerta.

Garcetti has lately faced criticism for his city’s coronavirus response, and he has been accused by restaurant owners of decimating their businesses through onerous and unpredictable restrictions.

Other appointments detailed in the announcement Friday include Denise Campbell Bauer, a top Democratic Party donor, who was named ambassador to Monaco. Bauer led Women for Biden during the 2020 campaign and served previously as ambassador to Belgium under former President Barack Obama.
