Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom is “worried” about the recall effort against him that might have collected enough signatures to go to a vote, he said Tuesday.
As the deadline for signature collection comes to a close, Newsom said he will “fight this thing.”
“I want to know, as a former Californian person, what is this really about?” The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked. “Because I think you’ve done a pretty damn good job in this gigantic state of keeping it together in circumstances where you didn’t get a lot of help.”

There have been previous attempts to remove him from office, and “this one appears to have the requisite signatures,” the governor added.
“Am I worried about it? Of course, I’m worried about it,” he said. “The nature of these things. The up-or-down question. The zero-sum nature of the question is challenging. It’s vexing. And so, we’re taking it seriously.”
Organizers of the recall effort have collected over 2 million signatures, more than the required 1.5 million to trigger a statewide recall vote. Wednesday is the cutoff for signature collection. Officials will have to verify the signatures to ensure that the necessary number has been reached.

“I have to do my job every single day, but I’m gonna fight this thing because I’m gonna fight for California values and the things I hold dear, and I think the vast majority of Californians, regardless of their political stripes, hold dear,” Newsom added.
