Fatal DUI suspect has previous traffic violations

The Columbia man whom police allege was drinking and driving when he crashed a vehicle, killing a female passenger, has a history of driving offenses.

Dwayne Shontae Williams, 27, of the 9200 block of Crazy Quilt Court in Columbia, is charged with driving under the influence and manslaughter after he drove a Chrysler into oncoming traffic at about 6:45 a.m. Saturday on Route 1.

Williams, whom police have declared the “at-fault” driver, was not hurt in the collision, but three other people were seriously injured, including Williams? front-seat passenger, who died.

Police have not identified that passenger.

Police said Williams was trying to make a left-hand turn from Route 1 into the Tip Top Motel in Elkridge when he pulled into the path of a Ford Ranger, causing the Ranger to strike his vehicle in the passenger side.

Williams? two passengers and the Ford Ranger?s driver were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Police have not released the name of either passenger.

The driver of the Ranger is identified as Johnny Grimes, 58, of the 1600 block of North Forest Park Avenue in Baltimore.

Williams has faced several driving charges, according to a search of court documents.

He was found guilty of speeding in 2000 in District Court in Hyattsville and again on Feb. 15 in Howard County District Court.

In 2003, Howard County prosecutors declined to pursue five driving charges against Williams, including speeding, failure to display a license on demand, and giving a fictitious name to police.

He also has faced criminal charges. In 2004, Baltimore City prosecutors dropped attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault charges against Williams. That same year, the Baltimore County State?s Attorney?s Office dropped theft and burglary counts against him.
