Looking for “Spice” in the Old Dominion? Look elsewhere

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Wednesday signed into law a measure that bans synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 or “Spice,” as well as hallucinogenic bath salts, in the state.

A number of legislators, including Sen. Mark Herring, D-Loudoun, sponsored bills during the 2011 General Assembly session to outlaw synthetic marijuana.

“I am pleased that Virginia has now joined at least 15 other states that have taken action to protect our citizens, particularly our young people, from these dangerous designer drugs,” Herring said. “Those who manufacture and sell these products know full well the purpose for which they will be used and should bear significant responsibility for the harm they are causing.”

Because the measure has an emergency clause, it will take effect immediately.
