Port commission takes action on elevation

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — The state port’s five-member board has abandoned a plan to elevate of the West Pier from 10 feet to 25 feet above sea level.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/Sfu4CD ) that the board on Tuesday asked its staff and consultants to come back on Nov. 8 with information and advice about bringing the pier to an elevation of 12 feet.

Some tenants had asked the board to elevate the pier to 15 feet.

The port is undergoing a $570 million restoration and expansion. Board members decided to save time and money by scrapping plans to go to 25 feet.

The first phase of that work had already started, but the dirt can be leveled off to help bring the pier to the 12 foot to 15 foot elevation.
