One person was killed and another three were injured Tuesday as the result of an explosion at a U.S. Army ammunition plant near Kansas City, Mo, according to an Army Joint Munitions Command statement.
The incident took place at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, about 15 miles East of downtown Kansas City. A spokesperson did not share the cause of the explosion or related details.
The 77-year-old plant is located on nearly 4,000 acres and contains 400 buildings and nine warehouses. It was the first one of now a dozen similar Army-run factories. This specific plant manufactured small-caliber ammunition.
Approximately 30 Department of Army civilians and one soldier work at the facility.
Independence’s Deputy Fire Chief Mark Carrick said the Army has its own fire brigade working on the explosion.
