A top Democrat wants Dole to close a plant in Ohio linked to a Listeria outbreak.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., sent a letter Friday to the FDA demanding the agency close a Springfield, Ohio, plant that is considered the source of the Listeria outbreak, which killed four people and sickened many others.
“It is an outrage that people had to die in order for Dole to temporarily close this plant for four months during the January Listeria outbreak,” DeLauro wrote to the FDA. “I urge you to immediately shut down Dole’s Springfield facility in order to put a stop to future outbreaks from this facility. Dole must be held accountable.”
DeLauro is a top member of the House appropriations subcommittee responsible for funding the FDA.
Dole is under a Department of Justice investigation over the outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that a multi-state Listeria outbreak is linked to packaged salads that were shipped from Dole’s Springfield plant.
