When your biggest fans are nicknamed “Stoopid Heads,” you’ve got to expect some crazy performances.
“The shows have been out of control,” said Miles Doughty, guitarist/vocalist for rock band Slightly Stoopid. “It’s going better than we ever expected.”
The San Diego-based group, founded by Doughty and childhood friend Kyle McDonald, blends acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop and punk.
Slightly Stoopid has been busy since early August promoting their newest album, “Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid” on their Tailgate 2008 Summer Tour.
What can fans expect from the new album?
It’s rarities, stuff from our last couple of recording sessions and some recordings we did with the Inner Circle guys. It really was just something for the fans, to get more music out to them. Every time we go into the studio we record, and we wanted to make sure we didn’t just leave any songs on the shelf. The way the record flows together, it’s very cohesive.
A couple of the songs are collaborations with reggae legends Inner Circle. How was it working with them?
It’s nice to be able to bring the generations together and play together. Inner Circle has been around for 30 years. This is one of the bands that kinda set the foundation of reggae. Music is really all about cycle, and combining generations — that’s important, because it keeps it alive and teaches the younger cats.
Ever get intimidated playing with bands you idolized growing up?
It’s more like you just don’t want to let them down. Playing with guys that have been around 30 plus years crushing it, you gotta step up your game. You want it to be sick every night just so they leave saying “These kids put it down.”
Slightly Stoopid has sold more than half a million albums. How do you keep grounded?
We’re the beach kids, we grew up with that “bare bones” kinda [expletive], me and Kyle have been friends since we were two. We don’t even think like that. We’re just happy to be doing what we’re doing — we’re the luckiest guys in the world.
