October rains have allowed D.C. area officials to lift a drought watch, which had been in effect since Sept. 9.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments on Thursday lifted the drought watch, during which residents and businesses were encouraged to limit their water usage whenever possible.
“We’re thankful that the recent rainfall has allowed us to lift the watch,” said Drought Coordination Committee Chair and Fairfax County Executive Anthony Griffin. “However, we want to emphasize and encourage the public to use water wisely all year long.”
The Potomac River is now running above long-term average levels and well above current water supply needs, according to a statement the council of governments issued Thursday.
