Trump draws comparisons during visit to Andrew Jackson’s grave

President Trump boasted on Wednesday that much like America’s seventh commander-in-chief he, too, succeeded in challenging the political establishment.

Trump made the comparison during a visit to the grave and childhood home of former President Andrew Jackson, whom he described as “the people’s president.”

“It was during the revolution that Jackson first confronted and defied an arrogant elite. Does that sounds familiar?” the president asked a crowd gathered for his remarks at The Hermitage in Nashville, Tenn.

“Captured by the red coats and ordered to shine the shoes of a British officer, Jackson simply refused,” Trump continued. “From that day on, Andrew Jackson rejected authority that looked down on the common people.”

“I have to tell you, I’m a big fan,” he said.

Trump, who was accompanied by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, has compared himself to the populist president on several occasions now, in addition to placing a portrait of Jackson inside the Oval Office.

“There hasn’t been anything like this since Andrew Jackson,” Trump told supporters during a dinner in mid-January, referring to the populist wave he rode into office.
