Trash collection in the District was suspended Wednesday in response to an early morning shooting at the Department of Public Works facility in the Brentwood area of Northeast Washington.
DPW spokeswoman Nancee Lyons said trash collection will continue to operate on a holiday schedule because of Columbus Day, pushing back collection a day. She said residents most affected are those with trash collection regularly scheduled for Tuesday, which would have been on Wednesday this week. They will not receive pickup until next Tuesday.
Residents with collections twice a week will still have a collection this week.
Lyons said DPW was still determining whether further disruptions in collection would occur next week as shock from the shooting wears off and employees seek counseling.
“Quite a few of them are distraught ,so we need to really figure out a strategy for how we’re going to get through he rest of the week,” she said. “Services may be suspended again, but we don’t know [yet].”
Lyons said employees are receiving counseling currently and the DPW is encouraging any employees to seek counseling if they need it.
