Funny How? The Substandard Tackles Scorsese

As far back as we can remember, we always wanted to be a podcast. But tempers flare: Sonny tells Jonathan to go get his shine box. Achievement Unlocked for JVL! And Vic claims his favorite Christmas present was a summer sausage–can you beat it? Designer jeans, bourbon at sea, and yet even more Rogue One. All on this week’s Substandard!

Endnotes and digressions:

* Sonny starts out by talking about something called Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. He said it was a collector’s item, but boy, howdy, I had no idea. If you go on eBay people are paying $50 for an empty bottle of the stuff. Empty.

* Also, early on I mention t-shirts from a brand called Lost; they’re the apparel side of Mayhem, a company that makes very fine surfboards. I’ve never surfed a Mayhem board (though I really want to ride a 6’6″ Quiver Killer) but I’m here to tell you that Lost t-shirts are among the finest pieces of clothing in the world. And pretty much the only shirts I wear.

* The editor of the New Atlantis (and friend of the show) Adam Keiper sends along this amazing clip of Carrie Fisher roasting George Lucas when he received AFI’s lifetime achievement award back in 2009. It’s only four minutes long and it’s a great way to remember her.

* Does Vic really look like the Asian Jack Palance? Believe itor not?

* Also mentioned midway through the episode is movie critic/writer/comic-book artist Mike Russell. He’s really great. You can see his work at CulturePulp.com and follow him on Twitter @culturepulp. You might consider purchasing his mini-comic, The Un-Inventor, which is clever and funny and tragic all at once.

* And contra Sonny, Lee makes jeans for men—who could forget the Buddy Lee: Man of Action campaign? My favorite was the “Hall of Mirrors” spot.

That said, I’m partial to Prana jeans. Which is not “Prada.” Vic and Sonny would know this if they were the type of guys who ever did stuff outdoors.

Prana’s Axiom is just about the best pair of jeans ever designed. It’s nearly perfect in every way. It’s the Pappy Van Winkle of—no, even better—it’s the Martin Scorsese of jeans.
