Trump Reportedly Taps Ryan Zinke for Interior Secretary

Montana representative and former Navy SEAL Ryan Zinke has been selected as Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Interior Department, according to multiple reports.

Politico and the Washington Post both reported the news, but, according to the former, the first-term Republican had yet to decide on the offer as of press time Tuesday evening.

Here’s Politico with more:

Zinke was an early Trump supporter. The Big Sky state Republican threw his weight behind the controversial nominee-turned-commander-in-chief in late May and stuck by him despite numerous Democratic attacks for doing so. He also campaigned with him, and his wife, Lola, is a member of the transition team dealing with veterans issues. The offer comes just days after multiple news outlets reported that No. 4 House Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) was the favorite to win the position. But multiple top Trump aides weren’t sold on the Washington Republican and encouraged Trump to broaden his search.

McMorris Rodgers posted a statement to Facebook Tuesday evening that indicated she wouldn’t be the nominee. “It was an honor to be invited to spend time with the president-elect, and I’m energized more than ever to continue leading in Congress as we think big, reimagine this government, and put people back at the center of it,” she wrote.

Zinke has been floated as a potential challenger to Montana Democrat Jon Tester for the Senate in 2018.
