April, the giraffe known for viral 2017 pregnancy, dies

April, the giraffe known for her 2017 pregnancy watched by millions of people online, has died.

Animal Adventure Park in New York on Friday announced she was euthanized by park staff due to her worsening arthritis, according to a post on social media.

April was 20 years old. The average lifespan of a giraffe in captivity is 20 to 25 years, longer than the 10 to 15 years in the wild, according to the park.

“We credit and thank the outstanding collective care provided by the park’s veterinarians and animal care team with keeping April happy and healthy during her more than five year stay at Animal Adventure,” the park wrote in a statement.

The park said teams worked to ensure April was comfortable to prolong her life while managing her arthritis before she died.

Her body was taken to the Cornell University Veterinary School for a necropsy. She will then be cremated, and her ashes will be returned to Animal Adventure Park.

When April was pregnant in 2017, her livestream amassed 232 million views. Giraffes remain pregnant for 15 months after conception.

In 2018, April became pregnant again, but the calf, named Azizi, unexpectedly died at a Texas zoo last year.
