British woman punches crocodile to save twin sister

A British woman boxed with a wild crocodile Sunday night to rescue her twin sister from its jaws.

Georgia Laurie, a 28-year-old from Berkshire, was swimming with turtles in a lagoon near Puerto Escondido, Mexico, when the crocodile tried multiple times to drag her sister, Melissa Laurie, under the water to drown her. Acting fast, she attempted to pull her sister back before punching the reptile.

“She dragged her back as the crocodile kept coming back for more — so she just started hitting it,” the twins’ older sister, Hana Laurie, said of the rescue, according to the BBC.

While the two were swimming in the bioluminescent waters of the lagoon as part of a tour group, Georgia Laurie heard Melissa Laurie cry out for help during the first attack, their father, Sean Laurie, said, according to the Daily Mail.

After she received no reply when she called out to check on her sister, Georgia Laurie swam out to look for her. Once she found Melissa Laurie floating facedown on the surface of the water, the 28-year-old attempted to bring her back to their tour boat, but the crocodile pulled her underwater again.

The crocodile’s persistence led the Berkshire woman to punch it in the face repeatedly, resulting in her suffering bites and cuts as well. She successfully fought off the predator and brought her sister back to their boat.

The Laurie family later discovered that the tour guide the twins hired was unlicensed and took them out to a dangerous swimming spot, Sky News reported.

Both twins are recovering in a Mexico hospital and on intravenous antibiotics. Melissa Laurie is in a coma with water in her lungs, one of which may be punctured. Doctors are taking precautions in case the women received any infections from the water or the crocodile.

The family is reportedly in contact with the British Embassy in Mexico, the Daily Mail reported, as it decides whether to make the trip to the country to bring the sisters home.
