Guns of all shapes and sizes turn up in the Metro system in various ways. Some are confiscated in the course of a criminal investigation, according to Metro data. One silver revolver was confiscated during an arrest at the Landover station in May 2010 after an assault.
But sometimes they represent the sole crime to occur.
In one case, a teen was arrested on Dec. 29 at the Franconia-Springfield station after trying to bring two rifle bags filled with guns and ammunition into the system. Two station managers stopped him when they saw the bags.
Inside, police found a handgun with its serial number filed off, a 12-gauge shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle, a .44 Magnum handgun and multiple rounds of ammunition. The teen was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Sometimes the guns are found on their own. In October, one gun was found at the Benning Road Metro station, the records show. Another was found at Tenleytown the month before.
And sometimes the guns aren’t real. Police have found pellet guns and BB guns, Metro records show, though sometimes they look real at first. A toy Glock, for example, was
recovered at the Capitol Heights station. – Kytja Weir
