Pelosi: Democrats ‘not even close’ to impeachment inquiry

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said House Democrats are not close to backing an impeachment inquiry against President Trump despite dozens in her caucus coming out in support of opening an inquiry.

During an interview at the Peterson Foundation’s 2019 Fiscal Summit, the California congresswoman responded to a question about whether she would back an impeachment inquiry if a majority of House Democrats did so.

“It’s not even close in our caucus,” Pelosi said before being pushed to answer if it could come in the future should there be majority support. “Why are we speculating on hypotheticals. What we’re doing is winning in court.”

“Nothing is as divisive in our country, in my view, than impeachment,” she added.

Despite distancing herself from the concept, Pelosi also said during the same interview that impeachment was not off the table.

Pelosi and some others in House leadership positions have pushed back on calls for an impeachment inquiry. Other members of her same party have come out in public support for impeachment, leading to tension within the House Democratic caucus.
