Homeland security reaches out to groups

Homeland security is reaching into neighorhoods.

Nonprofit, community-based organizations in the Baltimore region are invited to apply for grants to make their facilities more secure against terror attacks, government officials announced.

The $650,000 program is administered by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the Baltimore Urban Area Work Group, which is composed of officials from many jurisdictions including Baltimore and Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll, Harford and Baltimore counties, plus Annapolis.

Eligible enhancements include closed circuit television systems, lighting and fencing, identification systems and bulletproof and bomb-proof glass. Grant applications are available by calling the homeland security official in one of the participating jurisdictions and are due March 23.
