Cher apologizes for tweet calling Trump a ‘murderer’

Singer and songwriter Cher apologized for a tweet accusing President Trump of murder.

“trump HAS ACCESS 2 EVERY MASK, SHIELD, GOWN, GLOVE, BED, VENTiLATOR, RESPIRATOR, TEST KIT, NATIONAL GUARDSMAN, SOLDIER FROM ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, NURSES, DR.’S, TECHS, 1ST RESPONDERS NEEDED 2 SAVE THE LIVES OF CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS, & CAREGIVERS,” Cher said Saturday in a now-deleted tweet. “Trump IS A LIAR, & MURDERER. OPEN UR.”

The missive was referring to the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed nearly 300 people in the United States. Trump has been criticized for his administration’s response to the pandemic, including not having testing more readily available, for which he has heaped blame on his predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

A follow-up tweet by Cher offered an apology, claiming her “passion” got the best of her.

Cher, 73, added that she deleted the “murderer” tweet not because she was shamed by people in her life but because she did not think it would make her mother proud.

Cher, an Emmy, Oscar, and Grammy Award-winning artist, has been a vocal critic of the president since before he took office, saying in the summer of 2016 that Trump made her want to “blow her brains out.” Other complaints have been just as colorful and graphic, occasionally prompting her to admit she went too far.

In April 2018, Cher said Trump was a “cancer ravaging our nation.” Earlier this month, she warned that Trump would kill thousands of people and called for him to be removed from office.
