Pakistan blocks US envoy from leaving country

Pakistani authorities have barred a U.S. diplomat from leaving the country.

The move, reported by Reuters citing a local media report, comes a day after Pakistan said it would restrict the movements of American diplomats in the country in response to Washington making similar restrictions for D.C.-based Pakistani diplomats.

The decision to bar the diplomat from leaving comes amid worsening tensions between Pakistan and the U.S., as Trump abruptly cut military aid to the country earlier this year.

The new restrictions on Pakistani diplomats require them to get permission to travel more than 25 miles from their stations, a local Pakistani newspaper reported.

The U.S. State Department said it is in regular communication with the Pakistani government and does not divulge details of diplomatic conversations.
