Democrats ask Sessions to investigate Trump-Russia collusion

Eleven Democratic senators have asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Trump administration’s ties to Russia.

The letter, spearheaded by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., comes as multiple other Democrats in Congress have demanded an investigation following the resignation of his national security adviser Michael Flynn, who had discussed U.S. sanctions with a Russian diplomat before Trump took office.

The senators said the conversations between Flynn and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak “may be violations of criminal law and ethical standards.”

“Just as alarming as the legal or ethical wrongdoing is the strong likelihood that other members of President Trump’s team were involved in similar conduct, and the apparent cover-up by General Flynn together with other officials in the Trump administration,” it said.

The senators call for Sessions, the newly-confirmed attorney general, to appoint an independent special counsel “to maintain the confidence, credibility and impartiality of the Department of Justice.”
