Duncan Hunter: Send Wounded Vets Where Diplowimps Fear to Tread

Yesterday, we took note of how assignments in Iraq don’t interest the American diplomatic corps. Understandably enough. Why would a professional diplomat care to engage the most urgent diplomatic challenge of the 21st century when he could instead be inflating the ego of some third world potentate while being feted as some kind of royalty? Besides, since Iraq lacks a functional government that’s hostile to American interests, “going native” isn’t even an option. Because of the diplomatic corps’ distinct lack of enthusiasm for rolling up its sleeves and doing something productive in Iraq, Congressman Duncan Hunter has come up with a brilliant substitution – send wounded vets instead. In a press release, Hunter says:

“When the State Department appears to be filled with reluctant personnel, let’s turn to those who have bravely followed the American flag in the most dangerous of assignments. The U.S. Marines, soldiers, airmen and Navy personnel presently recovering at our national military hospitals have all the character required by the Department of State. They are brave, loyal, intelligent and fiercely determined to win the War on Terror.”

Yes, they are brave, loyal and intelligent. But will they look good in striped pants?
