Ukazoo Books to open in Towson

Ukazoo Books is writing its own story.

A successful Internet business started by local brothers Jack and Seth Revelle is poised for big things when it opens its first store June 18. Located in Dulaney Plaza, the 10,000-square-foot, new- and used- bookstore hopes to draw from both the college crowd and area residents.

With an inventory of more than 100,000 titles, the Revelles already have quite the collection. The online business has been averaging 50,000 books a year in sales.

“We wanted to make this store different and provide a better experience when you come in,” said Jack Revelle, 27. “Bright colors, open space, big reading rooms, original artwork from local artists. We have all the books in inventory, and if customers ask for a specific title, we have researchers who can help.”

Started in 2001, Ukazoo Books became the Revelles? pet project. With a successful online presence, the pair decided to quit college and focus on advancing the company. Despite being a small business (it will employ 11), Ukazoo offers employees health benefits and a 401(k) plan.

One of the unique aspects of the new store will be its ties to the local community. With more than 20 pieces of artwork on display, the location will have a unique ambiance, and it also will work hand in hand with local artists.

Area groups hope the opening of Ukazoo will be the beginning of more economic growth in the area.

“It?s wonderful and a sign of things to come,” said Nancy Hafford, executive director of the Towson Chamber of Commerce. “There?s a lot of activity going on. People who haven?t looked at us in years are looking at us now. A lot of people are negotiating leases.”

In 2005, Borders Books & Music left Towson Commons for Timonium, and last year, GreenLeaf, a Towson-area Christian bookstore, closed its doors.

The Revelles, however, are determined to succeed.

“The ultimate vision is to have it become a community-driven store,” Jack Revelle said.
