Pentagon rush hour halted after bomb scare

Highways around the Pentagon shut down Friday morning while police investigated a bomb scare.

Fort Meyer police apprehended a suspect around 1:30 a.m. Friday in Arlington Cemetery, U.S. Park Police Spokesman David Schlosser said.

The suspect was detained and questioned after police found suspicious materials in his backpack.

“He was not very forthcoming in the interview,” Schlosser said.

The backpack and the suspect’s unwillingness to cooperate led police to conclude they should find the suspect’s vehicle. They shut down highways while they searched for the car and examined it for bombs, but found nothing.

Meanwhile, I-395, I-295 and all exits around the Pentagon were closed for morning rush hour, though the Pentagon itself remained open.

“We wanted to keep the community safe, so that’s why we started with so big a perimeter,” Schlosser said.

The suspect remains in police custody while law enforcement conducts an “ongoing investigation,” FBI spokeswoman Brenda Heck said.

She promised that officials would open all roads as soon as possible.
