‘We’re going to get arrested every Friday’: Jane Fonda handcuffed on US Capitol steps during climate change protest

Actress and activist Jane Fonda was arrested on the steps of Capitol Hill while protesting climate change, something she expects to happen for the next few months.

Fonda, 81, was seen among other climate activists being handcuffed and led down the steps of the Capitol toward a nearby law enforcement vehicle on Friday. While she was being booked, Fonda and supporters were heard chanting, “There’s no future in fossils.”

Prior to her arrest, Fonda told the Washington Post that she was moving to Washington, D.C., for the next four months to rally against climate change and advocate for political change. Fonda said that 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg inspired her to begin demonstrating.

“Greta said we have to behave like it’s a crisis,” Fonda added. “We have to behave like our houses are on fire.”

Fonda said that she plans to get arrested every Friday for the next 14 weeks, noting that a handful of people will be joining her on the Capitol steps during the weekly protests. Fonda stars in the hit show Grace and Frankie and said that she will be in the District until filming starts back up.

“I’m going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the series, and I’m going to go to D.C. and I’m going to have a rally every Friday,” Fonda said. “It’ll be called ‘Fire Drill Friday.’ And we’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday.”
