A 45-year-old man has been indicted in the October killings of his estranged wife and stepson, Montgomery County officials said Thursday.
Authorities said a grand jury indicted Curtis M. Lopez on two counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping and one count of robbery. Lopez is accused of stabbing and beating 51-year-old Jane McQuain to death in her Germantown apartment, then picking up 11-year-old William McQuain — McQuain’s son and Lopez’s stepson — from a friend’s house and later killing him in a wooded area of Clarksburg.
Lopez had previously only been charged in Jane McQuain’s slaying, but was suspected in William’s death.
Prosecutors have alleged in court that Lopez fatally bludgeoned and stabbed McQuain in her sleep and beat William to death with a baseball bat.
Lopez was arrested in North Carolina on Oct. 13, a day after McQuain was found dead in her apartment on the 13100 block of Briarcliff Terrace the previous evening. An Amber Alert was issued for William, whose body was found the next week.
No motive for the killings has been disclosed.
Lopez was extradited to Montgomery County in early November and is being held without bond. An arraignment on the new charges is scheduled for Jan. 6.
McQuain was last seen alive the evening of Sept. 30. William and Lopez were seen on security footage at a gas station the afternoon of Oct. 1, near where the boy’s body was later found.
Prosecutors have said they are exploring whether to pursue the death penalty in the case.
