Utah Sen. Mike Lee joined a group of 30 congressional lawmakers in writing a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asking for an explanation as to why young children are being told to wear face masks.
In the letter, written to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, Lee and his colleagues lay out the serious consequences mask requirements have had on some, especially young children.

“Multiple parents of young children have been removed from flights, and in some instances, permanently banned, from future travel on the airline they were flying due to their toddler’s refusal to wear a mask,” the letter explains. “These unfortunate events have occurred despite the parents’ best attempts to have their child cooperate with the mask requirement, which is a struggle millions of parents have faced this past year.”
The CDC has recommended that children age 2 and older should wear a face covering in public despite many medical experts warning that babies and toddlers could have difficulty breathing, and several studies have shown that children are at a very low risk of spreading the disease.
“Within the United States, children younger than age 5 account for approximately 6% of the population but only 2% of total coronavirus cases,” the lawmakers wrote while also asking for more data from the CDC justifying the need for children to wear masks.

Face masks, specifically with children, have become a contentious issue after over a year of coronavirus restrictions.
Earlier this week, a Georgia mother went viral for delivering a message slamming lawmakers for continuing to mandate children wear face masks.
“This is not March 2020 anymore,” the mother said. “We have three vaccines, every adult in the state of Georgia that wants that vaccine is eligible to get it right now, and every one of us knows that young children are not affected by this virus.”
President Joe Biden, who was the only world leader wearing a face covering during a virtual summit on Friday, has maintained that masks are still necessary and has encouraged states that have dropped the mandate to reinstate it.
