Eco-friendly has taken hold at Northwest Honda.
The Owings Mills dealership recently remodeled its showroom and facility with a heavy emphasis on being “green,” according to a company release.
The most prominent environment-friendly feature is a green roof that sits on top of the building in the place of a regular roof, containing live plants that, because of their growth, help reduce filtering and cooling requirements in a building as well as less storm water run-off, according to a study by the Penn State Center for Green Roof Research.
Green roofs reduce educe carbon dioxide in the area, reduce summer air conditioning costs, reduce winter heat demand, lengthen roof life by two to three times, remove nitrogen pollution in rain and reduce noise, according to the Penn State study.
Northwest Honda, located at 9700 Reisterstown Road, has a 40,000 square-foot building with 30,000 square feet of green roof on top of the dealership. According to the dealership, it is the first green roof ofits kind in Baltimore County.
But the dealership didn?t stop at the green roof. It added more environment-friendly features including: exterior walls built with recycled concrete, main furnaces that burn recycled automobile motor oil, a carwash that uses recycled water, sensors that turn lights on and off when some enters or exits a room and energy saving insulated glass windows.
“Our team at Northwest Honda could not be more thrilled about the move to our new facility,” said Ed Dreiband, owner of Northwest Honda.
“This added focus on environmental consciousness is another way we are keeping our commitment to the community and the environment,” Dreiband said.
The $12 million facility is set on four acres of land purchased from Baltimore County in January 2001. Northwest dealerships have operated in Owings Mills, since 1985.
The architect for the remodeled dealership was Peter Powell and Rob Gordon of Beck, Powell & Parsons in Towson.
