Orrin Hatch claims Christine Blasey Ford is an ‘attractive’ witness, office says he was referring to her personality

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, described Christine Blasey Ford, one of the women who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, as an “attractive” witness Thursday as the Senate Judiciary Committee broke for lunch in the middle of her testimony.

“I don’t think she’s uncredible. I think she an attractive, good witness,” Hatch told reporters after the committee broke for lunch.

When pressed to explain his comments, he said, “In other words, she’s pleasing.”

Hatch’s deputy chief of staff and communications director Matt Whitlock later clarified that Hatch meant to describe her personality and not her appearance.

“This was after saying she was a ‘good witness,’” Whitlock tweeted. “Hatch uses ‘attractive’ to describe personalities, not appearances. If you search his past quotes, you’ll see he’s used it consistently for years for men and women he believed has compelling personalities.”

Ford has accused Kavanaugh of forcing himself onto her at a party in the 1980s and told the committee that she is “100 percent” certain Kavanaugh was the one who assaulted her.

Several other women have accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. He has denied all allegations and is slated to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee later Thursday.
