Baltimore County police have charged a 55-year-old man with six rapes that occurred between 1978 and 1989 in Towson.
Alphonso William Hill, 55, is accused of committing the crimes along the Loch Raven Boulevard corridor from the Baltimore County line with Baltimore City to the Interstate 695 Beltway.
Detectives began looking for an unidentified suspect that was linked by the Combined DNA Index System in June 2007 to six Baltimore County rapes and one Baltimore City rape.
After reviewing numerous unsolved cases, a county detective, whose spouse is a Baltimore City Police detective, began discussing the cases over dinner two weeks ago, according to county police.
During that conversation, the Baltimore Police detective remembered seeing a CBS 48 Hours segment during a city police training class about a rape committed in a similar manner by Hill, who was incarcerated for a Baltimore City rape in 2002.
On Aug.13, detectives went to the Western Correctional Institute whereHill is incarcerated and served a search warrant obtaining his DNA.
After submitting his DNA to the Baltimore County Police Department?s Biology Lab, detectives were informed on August 22 that Hill matched the DNA in the six unsolved cases as the suspect responsible for the rapes, police said.
Investigators have also collected evidence from at least 20 other unsolved rapes that occurred in these areas that they suspect Hill of committing.
Hill is charged with the six crimes in which he threatened the victims with a weapon and raped them:
? July 18, 1978 ,at 12:25 a.m. he allegedly entered a residence in the 6900 block of Donachie Road and raped a 27-year-old woman at knifepoint.
? Nov. 11, 1978, at 2:45 a.m. he allegedly kidnapped and raped a 22-year-old woman at gunpoint in the 6600 block of Collinsdale Road.
? Jan. 7, 1979, at 11:30 p.m. he allegedly entered a residence in the 6600 block of Collinsdale Road and raped a 25-year-old woman implying he had a gun.
? Sept. 7, 1979, at 12:45 a.m. he allegedly kidnapped a 24-year-old woman at gunpoint and raped her in a wooded area near I-695 on Dulaney Valley Road.
? June 29, 1983 at 3:36 a.m. he allegedly entered a residence in the unit block of Dowling Circle and raped a 32-year-old woman holding a gun to her head.
? March 14, 1989 at 3:30 a.m. he allegedly entered a residence in the unit block of Acorn Circle and raped a 33-year-old woman at knifepoint.
