U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., said Thursday that he would work with President Trump “when his ideas aren’t stupid,” referencing Trump’s recent push to send National Guard troops to guard the U.S.-Mexico border.
“I will gladly work with the president when his ideas aren’t stupid and detrimental to the United States,” Gellego said in an interview on CNN.

“Unfortunately this is what this plan is,” Gellego added. “It was not planned out … This is a failing presidency, their ideas are failing. So now they’re just throwing essentially red meat at their base by sending troops to the border.”
Gallego spoke the day after Trump signed an order directing the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to deploy the National Guard to the southwest border to work with border patrol to prevent illegal crossing.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told reporters Wednesday that the department would send troops immediately, but did not specify how many or how much it would cost. She said Thursday she was still in conversations with governors from all four border states about what the troops might do at the border, and noted she talked with California Gov. Jerry Brown, D, who is thought to be the one governor who might object to the plan.
