A Washington journalist started a GoFundMe campaign Thursday to raise money for the victims of the deadly Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis, Md.
Five Capital Gazette employees were killed and several others injured in Thursday’s tragedy, when suspect Jarrod Ramos allegedly opened fire through the glass windows of the newsroom office. The shooting was reported to be a calculated attack on the newspaper.
Madi Alexander, a reporter for Bloomberg Government, started the fundraiser out of an overwhelming need to help, according to The Baltimore Sun, which owns The Capital Gazette. The fundraiser started with an original goal of $10,000, which has raised more than $150,000 since its creation.
“Give what you can to help the Capital Gazette newsroom and their journalists,” the GoFundMe reads. “Our hearts break for our colleagues in Annapolis and we want to do whatever we possibly can to help them pay for medical bills, funeral costs, newsroom repairs, and any other unforeseen expenses that might arise as a result of this terrible shooting. You can subscribe to the Capital Gazette here.
“Please also take a moment to read the obituaries of the Gazette staff who were killed. Remember their names and faces:
– Gerald Fischman
– Rob Hiaasen
– John McNamara
– Rebecca Smith
– Wendi Winters
“Thank you all so much for the outpouring of love. The journalism community is truly a family,” the website further states.
President Trump on Friday said members of the media should be “free from the fear” of becoming targets of violence while doing their job.
