Obama: We need to ‘do better’ for vets

President Obama said Monday the government needs to “do better” to provide veterans with what they need.

We need to “make sure our veterans get everything they earned, from good healthcare to a good job,” said Obama who spoke during a Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Obama has repeatedly promised to do better for veterans.

In the days before the long weekend, Republican lawmakers have been re-airing complaints about failures of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which many feel hasn’t been sufficiently reformed after coming under fire for long wait times among other problems.

While Obama didn’t specifically address the VA’s problems on Monday, he acknowledged that there’s a need for the agency to improve its services to veterans.

The president also urged attendees to “remember” the servicemen and women who have given their lives by “being there for their parents and their spouses and their children.”

As he spoke, Iraqi troops assisted by the U.S.-led coalition prepared to seize back the Iraqi city of Fallujah from the Islamic State, which has held the city for more than two years.

Before speaking, the president laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
