Trump has discussed raising the minimum age for gun purchases: Report

President Trump has discussed the idea of banning anyone under the age of 21 from buying a gun.

A source close with Trump said the president thinks high school students should not be able to buy an AR-15 style gun, like the one used to kill 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last week, according to an Axios report.

However, the source said the discussions have been loose and open-ended, and nothing official has been declared or decided yet.

Current laws prohibit federally licensed firearm dealers from selling long gun rifles or shotguns to someone under 18, and cannot sell handguns to someone under 21.

Axios reported that Trump privately said, “We’ve got to do something. We’ve got kids dying.”

During Tuesday’s press briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed that an age restriction on buying guns could be something up for discussion in the future.

“I think that’s certainly something that’s on the table for us to discuss, and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks,” Sanders said.
