Firm looks to expand executive placement reach

It?s not always easy to be an executive ? or to find the right one. For top-level positions, both employers and potential employees typically use recruiting services to help fill their most elite positions.

In the Baltimore area, Stephen James and Associates, a national recruiting firm that is part of the Allegis Group, a network of human-capital management operating companies, helps to fill that void.

Through both recruiting and helping to place executives, Stephen James serves as the middleman in a complicated high-end workplace.

“It?s a process that start to finish takes two to three months,” said Carl Wright, CEO of Stephen James.

Focused on increasing its reach and level of service, Stephen James has a long-term plan of expanding to 50 offices in 50 cities in the next 10 years. The company has offices in Baltimore and Rockville, as well as Reston, Va.; Needham, Mass.; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; and Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Miami, Fla. Boston is the newest venture for the firm, which opened an office in the city June 20.

“We are a private company, but the goal has always been to have a billion-dollar top line in 12 years,” Wright said.

To find its niche in a crowded workplace, Stephen James focuses on mid-level executives in certain fields. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average executive management position makes nearly $92,000, Stephen James focuses on job placement in the salary range of $80,000 to $200,000. Within that range, the firm emphasizes the fields of accounting, finance, sales, marketing, banking and human resources.

“One of our big goals is to have a national practice in the banking area,” Wright said.

Wright told The Examiner that Stephen James has about 80 recruiters working for the firm. Typically, a business will approach the firm about an opening it needs filled. In the Baltimore region, Stephen James serves 15 to 20 clients but declined to comment on company names due to the nature of the industry.
