Rep. James Clyburn said he sees no problem with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refusing to turn over impeachment articles to the Senate.
Clyburn, 79, explained that he supports Pelosi’s decision to wait until she knows what the Senate’s process will entail. The South Carolina Democrat told Fox News that Pelosi cannot know how many impeachment managers to assign until she knows the process Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to use.
“We don’t know whether we should send two managers or 22 managers. If we knew what the process was, we would know what to do,” Clyburn said.
Host Neil Cavuto pushed back, saying, “But that’s not your process. That’s the Senate’s process, right? You’re not there to judge them anymore than they are to judge you.”
Cavuto added, “Are you worried, though, that this is looking bad for Democrats? It looks like you’re being petulant and all that. And everything you said Republicans were saying about the House?”
“The political process is a little bit like beauty: It’s in the eyes of the beholder,” Clyburn said. “It looks very good to me and to my constituents. What Nancy Pelosi’s doing is demonstrating once again that we are a country of laws, not of men or women. And in this instance, one man.”
Pelosi announced that she will hold on to impeachment articles into the new year and will not turn them over until she agrees to the terms.
