Contract workers who clean and maintain the District’s John A. Wilson Building are set for an 18 percent pay raise, according to the Service Employees International Union. The city and union signed a three-year deal that includes the raise as well as sick-leave and pension benefits for employees of R & R Janitorial and Painting & Building Services Inc., according to the union’s news release.
Under the new contract, 11 employees will see their wages rise from $12.10 an hour to $15.50 starting July 1.
From the release:
“By standing together, we were able to get big improvements to our wages, job security and benefits,” said Sonia Vazquez, a single mother of three who has cleaned the Wilson Building for seven years. “My mother’s very sick, I need all the help I can get to pay for her diabetes medicine and support my children.”
