Metro riders stuck with shorter, packed trains

The eight-car train is an elusive dream for Metro riders who endure packed rail cars on their morning commutes.

But the transit agency has had to postpone the vision of running more eight-car trains yet again.

Metro’s latest goal was to be able to run all eight-car trains by 2020. Under General Manager Richard Sarles’ budget proposal released last week, the agency does not have money set aside to pull that off.

Currently, only a third of all trains during the morning rush are eight-car trains, while the rest are the shorter six-car ones.

But that varies line by line. Red and Green line riders get the most eight-car trains, with half of all trains using the longer configuration during the morning rush.

Only two of every five trains on the Orange Line are eight-car trains, according to Metro. The Yellow and Blue lines have none.
