Hillary Clinton inspired loud boos from her supporters Saturday as she attacked FBI Director James B. Comey for sending Congress a letter this week informing lawmakers that his agency had turned up emails pertaining to its earlier investigation of her private homebrew server.
“I’m sure you have heard about a letter that the FBI director – ” the Democratic nominee started as her audience in Daytona Beach, Fla., broke out into angry boos.
Clinton continued, saying, “Well, if you’re like me, you probably have a few questions about it. It is pretty strange, it is pretty strange to put out something like that with such little information right before an election.”
“In fact,” she added, “It’s not just strange. It is unprecedented and it is deeply troubling. Voters deserve to to get the full and complete facts. So we have called on Director Comey to explain everything right away. Put it all out on the table.”
Comey informed Democratic and Republican lawmakers this week that his agency had turned up additional emails related to the private, unauthorized server Clinton maintained when she worked at the State Department.
Though the agency’s initial investigation of Clinton’s private email server was seemingly completed earlier this year, Comey’s letter this week said, “I am writing to supplement my previous testimony.”
“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation,” he wrote.
“I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation,” Comey said.
The Clinton email investigation has not been formally “reopened,” contrary to what Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, alleged Friday afternoon.
Rather, FBI agents are now inspecting emails found on a laptop shared by a top Clinton aide, Huma Abedin, and her estranged husband, disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, who is under investigation for allegedly sexting a minor. The laptop may contain as many as 1,000 emails, and agents are working to see if they relate to official government work, or if they are classified, or if they are simply duplicates of emails authorities already processed, the Washington Post reported.
The Clinton campaign’s response to the latest email development has seen the candidate and her team demanding that Comey come forward and explain the full meaning of his letter to Congress.
On Saturday, she did exactly that during her campaign rally in Daytona Beach.
