Betsy DeVos wants to look into underlying issues that cause a ‘culture of violence’ in schools

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Tuesday that the deadly shooting in Santa Fe, Texas was a reminder that people need to address the underlying issues that “create a culture of violence” that lead to such tragic events.

“Our commitment to every student’s success is one we must renew every day, but first, we must ensure our children are safe at school,” DeVos said while testifying before House lawmakers Tuesday.

Although DeVos is looking into underlying issues and renewing her commitment to school safety, she did not address the hot-topic issue of gun control after the latest school shooting.

Last week, 10 people were killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas, and over a dozen others were injured after a 17-year-old student opened fire.

According to DeVos, the school safety commission is looking “forward to delivering best practices” by the end of the year. The commission was created after the Parkland, Fla., shooting earlier this year claimed the lives of 17.

Her appearance before the House on Tuesday marks her fifth time testifying before congressional lawmakers. This latest address before Congress follows a trip to New York where DeVos was criticized for not visiting any public schools.
