Responding to a tweet by CNN analyzing the end of former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro’s presidential campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz slammed the Democratic Party and called its candidates “white, socialist septuagenarians.”
“In the history of the U.S., no Hispanic has ever won even a single Democratic presidential primary or caucus,” the Texas Republican tweeted. “(Fact the media will ignore: emphatically not true on the Republican side.) As this year’s field illustrates, Dem party is dominated by white, socialist septuagenarians.”
Castro, 45, announced the end of his candidacy on Thursday. His departure leaves only New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, and tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang as candidates of color in the race. None outside of Yang has a realistic chance of qualifying for the next round of Democratic debates.
Pundits have increasingly criticized the lack of diversity in the Democratic race as all of the top-tier candidates remaining in the race are white. Biden defended a lack of diversity in his campaign staff, saying his office was “representative of the Democratic Party.”
After California Sen. Kamala Harris dropped out in December, Booker told MSNBC it was “a damn shame now that the only African American woman in this race, who has been speaking to issues that need to be brought up, is now no longer in it.”
