Senator says Trump feeds a ‘hatred of others’ among his supporters

Mazie Hirono took to Twitter on Thursday to slam President Trump and his base saying, “Trump and his ultra-right wing base have a symbiotic relationship. They feed his narcissism and he feeds their hatred of others. A match made in totalitarian heaven.”

The Democratic senator from Hawaii tweeted the message amid deep tensions in Congress over a message Trump wrote last weekend about four freshman members of Congress who should “go back” to the crime-infested places they came from. Many interpreted Trump’s tweet as racist, though he later explained that he meant that if someone isn’t happy in the United States, they were free to leave.

Trump also disavowed a group of his supporters chanting “Send her back” about Rep. Ilhan Omar when Trump criticized her at a recent rally saying, “I was not happy with it — I disagree with it.” Rep. Omar responded by calling the president a racist and a fascist.

Hirono, 71, has never been shy about criticizing Trump and other Republicans online and on the Senate floor. She recently referred to outgoing Labor Secretary Alex Acosta as a “swamp creature,” and also called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a “Trump apologist.” She further called Trump a “sexual predator” after he referred to her as a “crazy female.”
