Trump: People will thank me for firing Comey when things calm down

President Trump said Wednesday that people will thank him for firing former FBI Director James Comey, because Comey had ruined the FBI’s reputation.

“Comey lost the confidence of almost everyone in Washington, Republican and Democrat alike. When things calm down, they will be thanking me!” Trump tweeted.

Trump fired Comey Tuesday evening and cited his treatment of the Hillary Clinton email scandal as his justification, primarily a July 2016 press conference where Comey detailed the investigation into Clinton but passed on seeking charges. Democrats rejected that rationale, instead arguing Trump fired Comey for digging too deep into his campaign’s alleged connections with the Russian government.

The decision caught many off-guard, including Comey. He was in California on a recruiting trip and found out about being fired when it was announced on television.

The president promised to replace Comey soon.

“James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI,” Trump tweeted.

Trump also continued his criticism of Democrats for their shocked reactions to his firing of Comey Tuesday evening, alluding to hypocrisy in their immediate message.

“The Democrats have said some of the worst things about James Comey, including the fact that he should be fired, but now they play so sad!” Trump tweeted.

Trump lashed out at Democrats Tuesday night for Sen. Chuck Schumer’s press conference and the minority leader’s “indignant” response.
