House GOP: We’ll write our own budget

House Speaker Paul Ryan said GOP lawmakers share “common objectives” with President Trump’s budget proposal, but plan on writing their own budget.

“We have a president who is actually giving us a balanced budget plan,” Ryan said Tuesday. “Clearly … Congress will take that budget, and then work on our own budget, which is the case every single year. But at least we have common objectives — grow the the economy, balance the budget. So, we are now on that common ground.”

Republican lawmakers greeted President Trump’s budget, which arrived on Capitol Hill Tuesday, with tepid praise.

The proposal balances the budget by counting on significant economic growth and deep domestic cuts.

“It’s a very conservative budget,” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said. “This is really a jobs-first, work-first budget. If you look at everything in this budget, it’s about economic growth and putting people back to work and making sure we have a working economy again. That is to be applauded.”

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., said the Trump budget puts economic growth first.

“Finally, we are shifting over to a president who actually recognizes that Washington has to live within its means and we have to create economic growth so families can finally be part of the American dream,” Scalise said.
