White House pledges support to Canada following Toronto van attack

The White House offered their condolences to Canada after a van drove into a crowd in Toronto and killed several people.

“The United States stands with the Canadian people in the aftermath of today’s tragic event in Toronto, where a van drove into a crowd of people killing several and injuring many more,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Monday.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected, and we wish a full recovery to those injured. The United States Government pledges to provide any support Canada may need.”

According to Canadian police, 10 were killed and 15 were injured as a result of the van attack. Alek Minassian has been identified by the Toronto police as the suspect and has been taken into custody.

Police have yet to identify a motive, although witnesses said the driver’s actions appeared intentional.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said it doesn’t appear the event was tied to national security, based on information currently available.

“The events are horrific, but they do not appear to be connected to national security,” Goodale said.
