WATCH: Rescuers attempt to retrieve boy from 105-foot well in Afghanistan

A young boy known as Haidar has been stuck in a 105-foot well for over two days in Afghanistan.

Rescuers in a village in southern Afghanistan worked quickly to retrieve the equipment needed to dig him out. Videos of their efforts quickly spread across social media.

In a video, Haidar is seen wedged in the narrow well crying. The space is so tight that he can only move his arms and hands a little. He is reportedly 65 feet down in the well.

Some reports say he’s likely between 6 and 9 years old. There are contradicting reports regarding the exact village the well is located in, ranging from Jaldak to Shokok. Although he’s been stuck in the well for over 50 hours, crews were able to lower him some food while the rescue effort continued.

“They brought down food for him and he ate,” one user wrote after sharing a video. “Alhamdulillah. There’s still hope.”

Alhamdulillah translates to “praise be to God.”

Acting Minister of Defense Muhammad Yaqoub Mujahed and Anas Haqqani, a key member of the leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, even paid a visit to the rescue site. A video of Mujahed supervising the effort also appeared on Twitter.

As of 3 p.m. EST, rescuers estimated that they were just a meter away from the boy. They stopped using equipment and began digging toward him with their bare hands.

“Haidar is still stuck,” one user wrote with an accompanying video.
