A U.S. Marine Corps pilot of an AV-8B Harrier jet ejected from the aircraft Tuesday during takeoff and is receiving medical care, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said.
The pilot was taking off from Djibouti Ambouli International Airport. After the pilot ejected, the jet crashed. The incident took place just after 4 p.m. local time.
Doctors said the pilot, who was evaluated at Camp Lemonnier’s expeditionary medical facility in Djibouti, was in stable condition, according to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.
“There are no reports of injuries to personnel on the ground nor damage to infrastructure at the airport,” U.S. Naval Central Command said in a statement.
The aircraft was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162 and embarked on the USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
