‘If I gotta go to war, I’m going with you guys’: Quotes of the week

The past week saw former President Barack Obama return to the White House where he upstaged his former Vice President Joe Biden. It ended on a good note for Biden, though, as Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed as the first-ever black female Supreme Court Justice. Here are the quotes of the week.

“We have to gather all the details so this can be an actual … war crime trial. This guy is brutal. What’s happening in Bucha is outrageous, and everyone’s seen it. … You may remember I got criticized for calling Putin a war criminal. Well, the truth of the matter, you saw what happened in Bucha. This warrants — he is a war criminal. But we have to gather the information.”

— President Joe Biden wants Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to face war crimes charges.

“These are war crimes and will be recognized by the world as genocide. It’s very difficult to talk when you see what they’ve done here. The longer the Russian Federation drags out the meeting process, the worse it is for them and for this situation and for this war. We know of thousands of people killed and tortured, with severed limbs, raped women, and murdered children.”

— Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is overcome with emotion while visiting Bucha.

WHITMER KIDNAPPING TRIAL COLLAPSES: TWO NOT GUILTY, TWO WALK FREE AFTER MISTRIAL

“You might amend a bill, but you’ll never amend biology. Science is not Burger King. You can’t just have it your way. … Take notes, Madame Speaker, I’m about to define what a woman is for you: XX chromosomes, no tallywacker. It’s so simple.”

— Embattled Rep. Madison Cawthorn tells the House floor what his definition of a woman is.

“Vice President Biden … vice president … That was a joke. … That was all set-up!”
– Former President Barack Obama refers to Biden by his former job title, before making a quick recovery.

“My name is Joe Biden and I’m Barack Obama’s vice-president — and Jill Biden’s husband.”
Biden shows no hard feelings.

“This senator has suggested over the course of the last two weeks and hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee that somehow this judge … aspiring to the Supreme Court is out of the mainstream when it comes to sentencing in child pornography cases.”

— Sen. Dick Durbin on Tuesday objected to Sen. Josh Hawley’s proposed legislation seeking tougher sentences for child pornography offenders, asking, “Why now?” ahead of Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

“No, I’m embarrassed by your leadership. I am not embarrassed for my country. I wish we were not losing to China. That is so disgraceful that you would sit here and conflate your failures with the failures of the uniform service members. You guys said that Russia would overrun Ukraine in 36 days. You said that the Taliban would be kept at bay for months. You totally blew those calls, and maybe we would be better at them if the National Defense University actually worked a little more on strategy and a little less on wokeism.”

— Rep. Matt Gaetz clashes with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a House Armed Services Committee Hearing.

“If I gotta go to war, I’m going with you guys.”
Biden makes jumps over to mention the Ukraine war while talking to union workers.

“I will do everything I can to defend any American, including children, whether or not they fit the categories you have mentioned or not. And if they talk about gender-affirming care, I am there to protect the rights of any American.”

— Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra defends a memo he released advocating gender confirmation surgeries for transgender teenagers.

“Since the mother tested positive for the rabies virus and the kits could have been exposed during grooming or other means, they were no longer able to be safely rehabilitated and were humanely euthanized.”

— The D.C. Department of Health gives grim news about a fox and her kits captured on the grounds of the Capitol.

“ABC, this threat of violence against me by @jimmykimmel has been filed with the @CapitolPolice.”

— Marjorie Taylor Greene is upset late-night host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke at her expense invoking the Will Smith Oscars slap.

“My advice to the Republican Party is to get over yourself. We all have people in our lives that we’ve stopped talking to. We have been offended by them, or we believe that they’re too far on the other end of the political spectrum from us that there is no sense in wasting words even speaking to them, and we need to get over ourselves. And start by listening. No one feels like anyone listens to them anymore. Listen carefully. Ask questions. Build a relationship.”

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem charges the Republican Party to listen and be willing to engage in civil conversation with others.

“Obviously this is a tremendously historic day in the White House and in the country.”
— Press secretary Jen Psaki hails the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Jackson’s confirmation was a historic moment for our nation. We’ve taken another step toward making our highest court reflect the diversity of America. She will be an incredible Justice, and I was honored to share this moment with her.”

Biden on Jackson’s confirmation.

“It has taken 232 years And 115 prior appointments for a black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. In my family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Jackson celebrates becoming the first black female Supreme Court Justice.

“This comes from a guy who raised his fist in solidarity with the insurrectionists? This comes from a guy who, before the Russian invasion, suggested that maybe it would be wise for Zelensky to make a few concessions about Ukraine and their willingness to join NATO? This comes from a guy who, just about a month ago, voted against Ukraine aid, and this final insult is that until, what, Secretary Austin resigns? That is not a reasonable request.

“That is preposterous — and coming from a person who exonerated Donald Trump for extorting Zelensky for withholding lethal aid. They withheld lethal aid until, unless, Zelensky would release false smears against Joe Biden’s son, and then he voted to exonerate President Trump for this. So spare me the new solidarity with the Ukrainians and with the free world, because this man’s record is exactly the opposite.”

— Sen. Brian Schatz, a Hawaii Democrat, blasts Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, for continuing to block Pentagon posts.

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year, however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.”

— The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bans Will Smith from the Oscars for 10 years for his slap on comedian Chris Rock.

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
Smith responds to the ban.
