DNC chair opposes banking bill that splits Democrats

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez admitted Wednesday he opposes a bill to reform the Dodd-Frank financial reform law that has split Democrats in the Senate.

Perez dodged the question several times on CNN, but finally said, “we should continue as we currently are” when asked if he can support the bill.

His reluctance to answer is a sign of how the bill has divided Democrats on the question of whether the law can be reformed in cooperation with Republicans. The GOP bill would raise the threshold for stricter oversight to banks with more than $250 billion in assets, from the current $50 billion level.

This week, more than a dozen Democrats supported the bill in a procedural vote, while the most liberal senators, including Dodd-Frank supporter Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., voted against it.

Perez seemed to take Warren’s side on CNN when asked if he sees her point.

“Well, I see the point of the American people … We have to protect consumers here, and I’m very fearful that there will be short memories and that we will again have a bubble,” Perez said.
